Step One: The Beginning

I've been teaching myself game development for the last two years. I'm an English teacher only wrote my first line of code a couple years ago when I got this idea into my head (I'm in my 40s by the way). What idea exactly is this, you may ask? Well, as a teacher, I've been a little disappointed by the reach and methodology of my profession. We're expected to stand in a classroom and lecture. I love blackboards (I have one in my house) but the times are changing, and teachers aren't. I wanted to see what a teacher could do if he or she could share their lessons with the world. So I decided that learning how to make games was something that all teachers should be forced to learn about. And as a kind of proof of concept, I decided to try it myself.

This is only my first attempt, but I have many more ideas, and I'm really falling in love with game making. Learning Unity was not that hard, and learning to code was surprisingly easy - it's just logical! But the art and design was by far the hardest. I started by drawing figures in Gimp, just like I would draw with pencil and paper. But I had no idea about scale or anything else (there's so much more to it). After a long time of trial and error, I started very slowly to learn about pixel art - and I think it might be my new passion. I hope to improve my ability to create pixel art, I think I might be good at it if I keep going.

In the mean time, I think I can create good learning activities that feel like games. That's what I want to do.
